Packing And Moving Wine
Those who have gone through the moving process understand how stressful it can be. Packing everything into boxes is no walk in the park, especially the items that are fragile. If you don't pack them correctly, these items are highly susceptible to being damaged. Not to mention that our most fragile items most of the time happen to be our most valuable. Therefore, we want to do whatever we can to make sure nothing bad happens to them during the move. For some, wine is one of their most cherished and valuable possessions.
The value of some wine collections are valued in the seven figure range. So anyone who has a high-priced investment like this can feel a lot of stress having it shipped. It's not just about making sure that the bottles don't get damaged, though this is pretty important. It's about making sure that the flavor and the color stay as they are as well. Extreme temperatures can change both color and flavor of a wine. The older and more expensive wines tend to be more sensitive to conditions.
The ideal temperature for wine to be stored in is 55 degrees. The best way to transfer it is by car, as the climate can be controlled much more there than in a moving truck. Moving trucks can get very hot and cold, which would be very damaging to wine. If you aren't driving yourself, then can hire a temperature-controlled wine transportation company.
Using styrofoam for packing wine is encouraged as it offers insulation and great protection of each bottle. A styrofoam box or inserts can be placed into cardboard box. Some may simply use packing paper to wrap their bottles in, while placing material in between each row of bottles. Each bottle should be wrapped with a minimum of two sheets, and secure them with tape. Styrofoam, packing paper, or bubble wrap can be placed in between each bottle. These materials should also be placed at the top of the box.
If you are flying and only have a couple of bottles to transport, then you can take them with you on your flight. It's recommended that you store the bottles in a wine luggage carrier so they are well protected. Being on a plane, they are more susceptible to being damaged or leaking.
While much emphasis should be placed on packing wine, placing it in a strong moving box is critical as well. Using the wrong box can undo all the work you put in to packing it.
